Works-with certification programs
“Works with” badges — Works with Alexa, Works with Google Home, Works with Apple Home, Works With SmartThings, Friends of Hue — are per-ecosystem certification programs, run by each vendor, that test a device’s integration with that one platform. They predate Matter and still cover many cloud-linked and proprietary integrations that Matter does not.
Each program has its own testing and listing process: the vendor verifies setup, control, and (for voice platforms) utterance behavior, then licenses the badge. The badge tells you the integration is vendor-tested — usually via the device maker’s cloud talking to the ecosystem’s cloud, or via HomeKit’s local protocol in Apple’s case. It does not tell you the device speaks any open standard, and it says nothing about other ecosystems.
Matter overlaps with but does not replace these programs: a Matter badge means baseline interoperability with all major ecosystems, while a works-with badge often covers a deeper, feature-complete integration with one of them. Cameras are the classic category where works-with programs still dominate, since Matter’s camera support is still rolling out across controllers as of mid-2026. On device pages we treat protocol certification and works-with badges as separate signals.
